Obituary for Jay P. Brown
Jay P. Brown, 87, of Gettysburg, died on Friday, March 24, at his home. Born December 25, 1929 in Fairfield, PA, he was the son of the late John E. and Sadie M. (Bream) Brown of Fairfield and Gettysburg. He was married to Mary Allison (Wilson) Brown. They were looking forward to celebrating their 69th Anniversary in October.
In addition to his wife, Mary, he is survived by a son, Daniel W. Brown and his wife, Linda, of Weaverville, NC, a daughter, Rebecca Anne Brown of Millersville, PA, two grandchildren: Margaret E. Baldwin and her husband, William E. Baldwin, of Gettysburg, and Andrew R. Brown and his wife, Elspeth E. Brown, of Weaverville, NC, and four great-grandchildren: Joseph E. Baldwin and Allison E. Baldwin, of Gettysburg, Henry Wilson Brown and Tatum E. Brown, of Weaverville, NC, two brothers: Guy E. Brown, of FL, John C. Brown, of NC, and a sister, Ruth B. Hackman of Lutherville, MD, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by two sisters: Helen Brown and Mildred Koons and a great-grandson, Robert E. Baldwin.
Jay graduated from Fairfield High School in 1947 and the York Chapter of the American Institute of Banking and attended Gettysburg College with the class of 1951. He was employed in the Gettysburg College Treasurer’s Office for nearly fifty years, thirty of which he served as Bursar and managed the accounting office.
Jay was a member of and had served on the consistory of Trinity United Church of Christ. He served as president of the Gettysburg Lions Club, the Gettysburg Chapter of the Gettysburg College Alumni Association, the Mason-Dixon Cotillion, and the Good Samaritan Camping Club. He served on the boards of Downtown Gettysburg, Main Street Gettysburg, Adams County Economic Development Corporation, the Adams County Office for the Aging, and United Way of Adams County. He was an honorary member and had served on the steering, fund raising, and finance committees of the Gettysburg Fire Department. He was a life member of both the BPOE #1045 in Gettysburg and the BPOE #763 in Hanover, a past member of the National and Eastern Associations of College and University Business Officers, and a member of the Gettysburg-Adams County Chamber of Commerce, AARP #2635 of Flohrs Church, Adams County Fish and Game Association, Men’s Interfaith Group, and a social member of the Gettysburg
Eagles Aerie #1562, and the Gettysburg American Legion Post 202. He enjoyed playing bridge with the Tuesday Men’s Bridge Club.
In addition to his employment at Gettysburg College, he had served as a public sale clerk for nearly fifty years with Clair R. Slaybaugh, C. David Redding and most recently with Keith L. Yingling, as well as a number of other auctioneers.
As a poet, musician, singer, and avid bridge player, Jay will also be remembered for his perpetual smile and positive approach to life. He also enjoyed playing his tonette whenever and wherever possible. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Christ Chapel on the Gettysburg College Campus with the Reverends George Heberling and Roy Fauth, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Fairfield, PA at 2:30 pm on Wednesday. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 5-8 pm at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg and on Wednesday from 10-11 am at Christ Chapel.
