Obituary for Joseph John Baumer
Joseph John Baumer, 88, Gettysburg, PA died Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at York Hospital.
He was born June 6, 1929 in Washington, D.C. the son of the late Joseph Lichtlin and Hazel Wells Phillips Baumer. Mr. Baumer’s wife, Helen Whelan Baumer died in 2009.
Mr. Baumer was a veteran of the US Navy. He was an Art Director for the US Information Agency and the National Geographic Society. Among his many achievements, Mr. Baumer designed Ameryka and Topic magazines, both initiatives commissioned to educate residents in the USSR and Africa, respectively, about America and our way of life. His work in the Foreign Service took him on many travels including Hong Kong, Pakistan, and England. He met with and interviewed many notables, including Jamie Wyeth, Norman Rockwell, Duke Ellington, and Lee Iacocca for whom he designed the Ellis Island Commemorative publications.
An avid antique car collector, Mr. Baumer restored a 1936 Ford Phaeton, 1939 2-door Ford Convertible, 1941 Ford Super Deluxe, and 1957 Thunderbird. He spent years travelling the country through barnyards, roadsides, dilapidated structures, and meets seeking and trading original auto parts for each of his cars.
Joseph is survived by a daughter, Valerie Mainwaring and her husband Doug of Gaithersburg, MD, a son, Jeffrey Baumer of Gettysburg, PA, grandsons Michael and Christopher Mainwaring, numerous nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his beloved sister, Marie McIntyre.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 10:00 AM at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA. A reception will follow the service as announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
