Obituary for Anna Margaret McDermitt
Anna Margaret McDermitt, 104, formerly of Gettysburg, PA died Thursday, August 4, 2016 at Columbia Cottage in Hanover, PA.
Anna was born April 6, 1912 in Gettysburg, PA the daughter of the late Edward and Marguerite Althoff Redding. Mrs. McDermitt’s husband of 64 years, Francis Leo McDermitt died in 2004.
Mrs. McDermitt was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church for over 100 years, 50 of which she served as a Sacristan. Anna was briefly employed by the Gettysburg Times and she helped deliver Meals on Wheels. She was devoted to her family and enjoyed tending her many flower gardens.
Mrs. McDermitt is survived by three children: Jane Hutton of Hanover, PA, Margaret Olson Slaybaugh and her husband Ron of Middlebury, VT, and David McDermitt and his wife Maryellen of Jupiter, FL; seven grandchildren: Michael McCleaf, Brian McCleaf, Jennifer Shearer, Justin Olson, Matthew McDermitt, Daniel McDermitt, and Abigail McDermitt; seven great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren, and a brother, Richard N. Redding. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas McDermitt, and five brothers: Charles Redding, Donald Redding, Edward Redding, Clair Redding, and Martin Redding; and four sisters: Ruth Eck, Beatrice Kohler, Sister Mary Canisius, and Vera Smith.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, August 8, 2016 at 2:00 PM at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, West High Street, Gettysburg, PA with Fr. Daniel Mitzel celebrant. Interment will be in the church cemetery. There will be a viewing at the church on Monday from 1:00 PM until the time of the Mass.
