Obituary for Anne Poindexter Stuart

Anne Poindexter Stuart (formerly of Bristol, Va, 1933- 63; Coldwater, Mi, 1963-77 and Gettysburg, Pa 1977-96) died on Dec. 20th, 2023 at her daughter’s home in Gettysburg, Pa surrounded by family and wonderful Bridging Life Hospice care providers.

She was born on April 8th, 1933, the daughter of Charles Carr Poindexter and Dorothy Bradley Poindexter of Bristol, Va. She was a graduate of Emory and Henry College, Abington, Va and studied secondary education and English literature.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Stuart Brownley, husband Ross Brownley of Gettysburg, Pa; son, Alex G. Stuart of Bristol, Va and grandchildren: Jennifer Pickering and husband, Jason Denman of South Bend, In; Matt Pickering and wife, Katie of Boerne, Tx; Charley Pickering and wife, Alix of Elkhart, In; Aaron Brownley and fiancee,’ Danielle Zeigler of Murraysville, Pa; Hailey Brownley of Gettysburg, Pa and great grandchildren, Jason Denman of South Bend, In; Blake, Cody and Ella Pickering of Boerne, Tx and Jack Pickering of Elkhart, In.

Preceding her in death were daughters, Anna K. Stuart, deceased March 5th, 2016; and Martha P. Stuart, deceased January 16, 2022.

Anne was an avid reader, lifelong student, bridge player, Gettysburg Historian and volunteer.

Throughout her life she was unshakable in her faith in God and was the definition of a southern lady: kind to everyone, generous and forgiving, unconditional in her love of family and friends and dearly loved by all who had the extraordinary good fortune to know her.

Above all, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her name to: Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 760 Cumberland St., Bristol, Va. 24201. No funeral arrangements have been made at this time.
