Obituary for Barbara Joan (Sadler) Schutt

Barbara Joan (Sadler) Schutt, 81 of Aspers, PA passed away at her home on Thursday, October 26, 2017.

She was born in Gettysburg, PA on December 30, 1935, the daughter of the late Clarence M. “Bugs”& Gladys Opal (Stoops) Sadler.

Barbara was a graduate of Gettysburg High School, class of 1953. She was a drum majorette for the band for four years. She was the head majorette for the Gettysburg VFW Post #15 Marching Band and was of the first to use the fire batons. Barbara attended Harrisburg Business School and was employed as a legal secretary. She then become the secretary for the Adams County Superintendent of Schools. In 1968 she decided to take the test and became the first female licensed battlefield guide, retiring in 1990. While living in Texas in the 1990’s she became the manager and Postmistress of the historic Camp Verde General Store, site of the U.S. Government Camel experiment until returning to Pennsylvania in 2002. Barbara was a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg and currently is a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in York Springs, PA. Barbara was past President of the Civil War Round table, The Licensed Battlefield Guide Association and Professional Business Women. She was a former advisor for Senior Girl Scout Troop #950. Barbara also was a Tour Director for Tauck Tours and gave many Nashville, Tenn. tours for Lincoln Bus Lines.

Barbara is survived by her husband, O. Frederick Schutt, Jr. whom she married in 1963, they would have celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on November 27th of this year, her daughter, Suzette S. Redding and husband Michael of Arendtsville, PA, grandson, Mike E. Redding of Gettysburg, brother, Pastor Timothy W. Sadler and his wife Pastor Karen Minnch-Sadler of Lancaster, PA. She was predeceased by a grandson, Justin C. Redding.

A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in York Springs, PA with Pastor Ben Leese, officiating. A private burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Gettysburg. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at the church from 10-11 a.m. and following the Celebration of Life at a reception in the church’s fellowship hall. Memorials in Barbara’s honor can be made to the Adams County SPCA, 11 Goldenville Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325. The Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg is assisting the family with the arrangements, online tributes and condolences can be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
