Obituary for Barbara L. Burkhardt
Barbara L. Burkhardt, 75, Herr’s Ridge Road, Gettysburg, PA passed away on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at the Gettysburg Hospital.
She was born April 18, 1940 in Gettysburg, PA the daughter of the late Milton P. and Margaret Creeger Carback. Barbara is survived by her husband of 53 years Karl L. Burkhardt.
Mrs. Burkhardt was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, PA. She was a 1958 graduate of Thurmont High School and a 1962 graduate of Gettysburg College with a major in English and a minor in German. While at Gettysburg she was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. Following college Barbara began her teaching career at the Army Education Center in Ft. Knox, TN where she helped GI’s earn their GED’s. After returning to this area she began a 30 year career as an English teacher at Biglerville High School from 1965 until 1995. She will be fondly remembered by the Biglerville Class of 1971, for whom she was their Class Advisor. Both Barbara and her husband were Western Square Dancing enthusiast serving in several leadership roles with the Cannonaders Square Dancing Group, including three terms as President. She also enjoyed gardening and crafting.
In addition to her husband Mrs. Burkhardt is survived by a sister, Nancy Riffle and her husband William of Thurmont, MD, two nieces: Lisa Riffle of Thurmont, MD, Julie Riffle of Baltimore, MD, a nephew, James Riffle of Smithsburg, MD, a great niece, Jesse Grubb and her husband Keith of West Virginia, and a great great niece, Hannah Grubb.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at St. James Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, PA. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. Interment will be on Thursday, February 11th at Blue Ridge Cemetery in Thurmont, MD at 11:00 AM.
