Obituary for Clair R. Slaybaugh
Clair R. Slaybaugh, 106, died peacefully on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the Meadows at Gettysburg.
He was born at home on April 4, 1911 in Guernsey, Adams County, PA the son of the late Albert Wright and Albertha Mae (Rice) Slaybaugh.
Clair met Anna Weidner and they were married in Maryland on August 11, 1934. Together, they had one daughter, Lois. They were married for 69 years, when Anna passed away in November of 2003, at the age of 92.
He followed in his father’s footsteps and became an auctioneer at the age of 16, in 1927. He called his last sale at the age of 90 in 2002. He was also a carpenter and a mason. He enjoyed restoring furniture. He also enjoyed his dog “Perky”.
Clair is survived by his daughter, Lois Griffie, of Biglerville, PA, a granddaughter, Lucinda Swiger and her husband Bruce of Biglerville, PA, two grandchildren; Erica Swiger, and Quaid Swiger both of Biglerville, PA. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Clarence Griffie, a grandson, Quentin Griffie, brothers and sisters; Gladys Wirt, Earl Slaybaugh, Pearl Starry, Margie Kennedy, Raymond Slaybaugh, James Slaybaugh, and Isabelle Guise.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at 11:30 AM at Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Stuart Johns officiating. Interment will be in Bendersville Cemetery. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Adams County SPCA, 11 Goldenville Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
