Obituary for Col. John Lawrence Reber
Col. John Lawrence Reber, US Army (Ret), 86, New Oxford, PA passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2022 at home, surrounded by family and grateful to be home with his wife.
He was born on Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii on April 25, 1936 the son of the late Col. Edward Cassel, US Army (Ret., USMA ‘28) and Betty Rose Reber. John was the oldest of 3 siblings, along with sisters Patricia and Cynthia. John is survived by his wife, Soo Choi Reber.
John was a proud graduate of the United States Military Academy West Point, Class of 1960. He met his wonderful wife Soo while stationed in South Korea, and returned several times over his career to enrich our lives with the Korean culture. Together, John and Soo completed his military career having been stationed in South Korea, Ethiopia, and every state between North Carolina and New York. They retired in Gettysburg, where John was an active member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church serving in various capacities. It was here he also found his calling becoming involved with the Adams County Habitat for Humanity. John was an avid golfer who loved to spend time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. He was a loving husband, amazing father, and all-around good person who always saw the positive in life and in people…he will be thought of often.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by three children; Helen Blankfeld of Gaithersburg, MD, Douglas Reber and his wife Michele of Mechanicsburg, PA, Edward Reber and his wife Ellen of Douglas, MA, six grandchildren; Jessie, Jeff, Nicole, Katie, Marissa, Jacob, a great grandchild, Benjamin (Benny), and a sister, Cynthia Smith of Ellicott City, MD.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 at 11:00 AM from Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Caleb McClure officiating. Interment will be at a later date at West Point Military Academy Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
