Obituary for Cynthia A. Gibbon
Cynthia A. Gibbon (née McClure), 62, of Gettysburg, PA died Monday, June 18, 2018 after a long illness.
Born December 24, 1955 in Franklin, PA, she was the daughter of Clara McClure (née Chiappelli) of Blairsville, PA and the late Richard McClure. She was married to Thomas C. Gibbon for 29 years.
Cinda moved to Gettysburg in 1986 to teach English at Gettysburg Area High School. She later worked as a librarian at Gettysburg College and at Harrisburg Area Community College, then as Associate Dean of the Lehman Library at Shippensburg University. Throughout her life, her adventurous spirit led her to work as a jewel purchaser in New York City, at a koi fish farm in Seattle, WA, at a dairy farm in Canada, and elsewhere. She studied French and Italian, did an internship at the BBC in Glasgow, Scotland and took a cooking class in Tuscany, Italy. She was a multi-disciplinary artist who published essays, directed plays, and had recent solo art shows in the Unitarian Universalists Church and on the HACC Gettysburg Campus. Friends remember her as a gregarious conversationalist, a renowned backyard party host, and the first on the dance floor. She prided herself on building community, and especially welcomed newcomers into her world.
In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her three children, Tristan Gibbon, of Gettysburg, PA, Freya Gibbon, of Carlisle, PA, Oliver Gibbon, of Gettysburg, PA, and her two sisters, Christine McClure, of Garden City, KS, and Cheryl Dunn, of Blairsville, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 23, 11:00 am, at the Paul Recital Hall, 2nd Floor, Schmucker Hall, Gettysburg College, 250 N. Washington St. Light refreshments to be served.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Adams County SPCA, the Adams County Arts Council, or the Multiple Systems Atrophy Coalition.
