Obituary for Daniel R. Sherman

Daniel R. Sherman, 67, of Gettysburg, PA passed away Wednesday morning, June 5, 2024 at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center surrounded by family following a lengthy courageous fight with cancer.

Born October 28, 1956 in Graceville, MN, he was the son of the late Darlene Harvey and Henry Powlish, and the adopted son of the late Richard and Patricia (Murphy) Sherman. He was the husband of Janine (Hill) Sherman of Gettysburg to whom he was married for 34 years.

Mr. Sherman was a Veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he trained as an aircraft communication systems technician servicing helicopters and F-4's. While stationed in Quantico, VA, Dan was a member of the Marine Helicopter Squadron One working on the President's Marine One.

Dan was employed as a computer engineer with Hewlett-Packard for over 34 years. He was a member of the Blue and Gray Radio Control Airplane

Club and Harley Owners Group. An avid football fan, he owned Redskin Football Season Tickets for over a decade. He was a man of strong convictions with a sharp wit and a 'suffer no fools' outlook. He had an uncanny dedication to all things NASA and traveled repeatedly to Kennedy Space Center to witness the final Space Shuttle launches. Dan was an accomplished vocalist and musician playing both guitar and keyboards who occasionally performed locally. He and his wife were known to attend an array of classic rock concerts over the years. Dan was a fastidious model builder, dissectologist, and an ardent collector of books, movies, and other various objects that piqued his interest. He was a devoted family man who spent many summers camping, boating, and skiing with his family at Lake Anna in Louisa, Virginia. As an amateur photographer, he cataloged his family's worldwide travels which he was fortunate to experience from the Pyramids in Giza to a South African Safari and many places in between.

In addition to his wife, Janine, he is survived by daughters: Jacqueline Weaver of York, Jessica (Erich) Bernhardt of Lancaster, and Jaira (Mitchell) Waddell of West Chester. Surviving sisters include: Kathy Powlish, Karen Hovey, Cindy Finberg, and Sharon Gilbert all of Minnesota, and brothers Hank Powlish of Minnesota and Mark Brehm of Washington. Dan is survived by six grandchildren, all of whom he doted upon.

In his honor, please consider becoming a blood donor or make a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. The Monahan Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements and online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
