Obituary for Dean Edward Carey, Jr.

Dean Edward Carey, Jr., 71, of Orrtanna, PA, died suddenly at his home on Tuesday morning, May 7, 2024.

Born April 30, 1953, in Gettysburg, PA, he was the son of the late Dean E. and Beatrice (Topper) Carey. He was the husband of Susan K. (Leach) Carey. The two were able to spend their 50th wedding anniversary together this year at one of their favorite and fun memory filled locations, Ocean City, MD.

In addition to his wife, Dean is survived by his two children and their significant others: Heather and her husband, Mike Seraphine, of Oshkosh, WI; and Heath N Carey and his wife, Shelley Bergmann, of Missoula, MT. Dean is survived by his sister and her husband, Peg and Dave Diehl of Aspers, PA. While he was PopPop to numerous fur babies, he was especially fond of his Silver Labrador, Beauregard. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Redding.

Deano, as he was known to many, was a 1971 graduate of Gettysburg Area High School. He worked for many years at Westinghouse then later Schindler Elevator in Gettysburg and retired from D.L. Martin in East Berlin. He was an active member in many different hunting, archery and outdoor clubs over the years. Deano was a little league and teener league coach, as well. He held a special place in his heart for all of his baseball boys and we’re pretty sure they held him in a special place too. An avid outdoorsman, Dean especially enjoyed spending time outside and sharing his passion with others. Gardening was one of his favorite activities - he and Sue’s garden is a Certified Wildlife Habitat. The flowers and birds around their home and patio is truly a sight to behold that Dean took much pride in every summer.

The family would like to express special thanks to the Buchanan Valley Fire Department. We appreciate you being there as quickly as you were and giving our Mom the support she needed. We are very grateful.

The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM, Monday afternoon, May 13, 2024, at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA. Online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com
