Obituary for Diane M. Kierniesky
Diane M. Kierniesky, 73, of Gettysburg died February 9, 2017. Her husband, Nicholas C. Kierniesky, died on October 16, 2014. Ms. Kierniesky had retired from Adams County Children and Youth Services in July, 2005, as a Casework Manager.
Diane Maria Morris was born on June 10, 1943, in Miami Beach, Florida. She was the daughter of Joseph and Peggy Morris. Following World War II, the family moved to Narberth, a suburb of Philadelphia. Diane graduated from Lower Merion High School and earned a bachelor's degree in History and Politics from Rosemont College.
Diane worked for two years as an elementary school teacher in East Whiteland Township. Her next position was that of a Ranger Historian at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, PA. Diane married Nicholas Kierniesky, a graduate student at Tulane University; the couple lived in New Orleans, LA. In New Orleans, Diane worked as a Field Advisor for the SE Louisiana Girl Scout Council.
Nicholas took a faculty position at Mt. St. Mary's College; the couple settled in Gettysburg, PA. Diane did substitute teaching and volunteer work and raised sons David and Stephen. She worked for the WIC program before beginning her 20 year career in child welfare.
Diane was a member of St.Francis Xavier Church. She continued her volunteer tutoring with the Adams County Literacy Council following her retirement from Adams County Children and Youth Services. Diane enjoyed travel, music, yoga and cooking. Since her childhood she loved reading and was an enthusiastic member of the Gettysburg YWCA Book Club.
Diane Kierniesky is survived by her sons David Kierniesky of Gettysburg, PA and Stephen Kierniesky of Gettysburg, PA; sisters Marguerite Lambrinos of Port Hueneme, California, Tracey Morris of Drexel Hill, PA, and Marylin Redmond of Collegeville, PA. She is also survived by brothers Michael Morris of Wesley Chapel, FL and Robert Morris of Dunedin, Florida; uncle Thomas Murray, cousins and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 18, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 22 West High St. Gettysburg, PA with Fr. John Kuchinski Celebrant. Burial will be in Mt. St. Mary’s Cemetery, Emmitsburg, MD. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass Saturday at the church. The Monahan Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements and online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
Contributions may be made in Diane's memory to Rosemont College, 1400 Montgomery Avenue, Rosemont, PA 19010 or to the Gettysburg Adams County YWCA or the Adams County Public Library.
