Obituary for Dorothy Keeney Peterman
Dorothy Keeney Peterman, 92, of SpiriTrust Lutheran Village at Gettysburg, died Sunday, June 11, 2017.
She was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Gettysburg College, where she majored in Philosophy and English. She received a master’s degree in Library Science working as a librarian in the Williamsport Area School District, Westmont Hilltop School District and finally in the Lampeter Strasburg School District, from which she retired in 1984. In 1988, she was elected to serve as the first Secretary of the Lower Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and continued to serve until 1999. Appointed to the board of SpiriTrust Lutheran, she served for many years as the board’s Secretary. She was an active member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving on Congregation Council and various committees.
She is the daughter of the late Reverend Walter A. Keeney and Ruth Group Keeney. Her husband of 44 years, the Reverend C. Wayne Peterman, died in 1990.
She is survived by brother, Walter A. Keeney, Jr. (Miriam Bair Keeney), sister, Miriam Keeney Musselman (Glenn Musselman, Jr.). Another brother, Galen E. Keeney (Naomi Kulp Keeney, surviving) predeceased her. She is also survived by sons, Kirk W. Peterman (Barbara Jean Peterman), of King of Prussia, PA; J. Mark Peterman (Janice S. Peterman), of Amherst, MA; D. Kent Peterman (Janet S. Peterman), of Philadelphia, PA; and Constance P. Dunlop (James S. Dunlop), of Mechanicsburg, PA. She has 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, with the Reverend Stephen Herr officiating. The family will receive visitors on Thursday evening from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Monahan Funeral Home, Gettysburg and at 9:00 AM at the church prior to the service.
