Carey Armstrong Moore, age 94, of Gettysburg died peacefully at home under hospice care surrounded by loved ones on September 28, 2024. Born March 5, 1930, in Baltimore, MD, Carey was a 1952 graduate of Gettysburg College, majoring in Ancient Greek. Carey met his wife Patricia Emlet (Moore) at the college and they were married on New Year’s Eve 1952.
After graduating from Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary in 1956, Carey and family moved to Baltimore where he served as a Lutheran minister while pursuing his PhD in Semitics from The Johns Hopkins University, and receiving his doctorate in 1965. His language studies included Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, Sumerian, Babylonian, as well as Latin, French and German.
In 1959 Carey returned to Gettysburg College, where he ultimately became a full professor in the Religion Department, later serving as department chairman. An Old Testament scholar, Professor Moore taught there for 41 years, until his retirement in 2000. In addition to his Old Testament and other standard courses, Dr. Moore also enjoyed teaching Women in Biblical Times, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, and a very popular seminar on Death and Dying. Carey was instrumental in bringing the first hospice to Adams County in the 1980’s.
Dr. Moore also enjoyed archeology, working several summers in Israel at ancient civilization sites Tel Gezer and Tel Dan. His wife Pat excavated with him the summer of 1968 during a one-year sabbatical when his family lived in Jerusalem.
Carey was the author of several books for Doubleday’s “The Anchor Bible Series” including Esther, Judith, Tobit and others. He wrote numerous scholarly articles for biblical journals and presented papers in the U.S. and abroad. A world traveler, Carey toured Europe, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt with his family. Later he and Pat travelled extensively. Trip highlights included visits to Peru, China, two African safaris and more.
Pat and Carey, avid joggers, could be seen running on the Gettysburg Battlefield for more than 30 years. He completed three marathons, two with his wife. Carey enjoyed singing in the Harrisburg Keystone Capital Chorus and the Gettysburg Civic Chorus, joined by his wife and son Bruce. He passed on his love of performing to daughter Kathy and sons Stephen “Heartsong” and Bruce, as well as his and Pat’s voracious love of reading to all four children. Carey also served on numerous boards and foundations in Adams County.
Carey was the only child of Carey Armstrong Moore Sr. and Grace Bell Moore. He was predeceased by his wife (of 68 years) Pat and is survived by daughter Kathy Moore McDougall (husband Brad) and sons Stephen “Heartsong”, David (wife Carol) and Bruce Moore. Grandchildren include Amara, Raphaela, Luke, Michael, Rebecca and Conor as well as great grandchildren Quinn, Wyatt, Nadia, Dmitri, Lila and Jesse.
A memorial service will be held this Saturday, October 5th, 2024, at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Gettysburg located at 136 S. Stratton St. at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family notes that contributions to the church (checks made out to UUG of Gettysburg) are welcome.
