Obituary for Florence B. Metz
Florence Metz, age 88, died peacefully in her sleep at the Brethren Home in Cross Keys, New Oxford, PA on April 28, 2017.  A lifelong resident of Adams County, she was devoted to her family, friends and community.  She was born on August 9, 1928 the youngest child of James Bowling and Nora Bowling on their farm in Fairfield, PA.  She attended Gettysburg High School where she graduated with a business degree and began to work at Central Chemical Corporation as a bookkeeper.  She later worked in the Adams County Court House.
She met her future husband, Thomas Metz, when he returned from active duty after World War II.  They embarked on their life-long adventure after they were married on July 29, 1950. They engaged in many business, social, and philanthropic activities.  She delighted in travel, sailing, and skiing.  They traveled to Europe on the QE II and returned to the United States on the Concorde.  Later, Florence made many trips to Asia with Tom for his business enterprises.  A devout Catholic, Florence never missed attending Mass no matter where their travels took them.   She was the muse and inspiration for the La Cherie and Flo Gently I and II, sailboats and was an able First Mate to Tom’s captain.  Skiing was a big part of their lives and they loved going on ski trips with friends.  Florence learned to ski as an adult and became quite accomplished, skiing the black diamonds with the best of them without getting her hair out of place.
She enjoyed the company of their large families and many friends.  She was a gracious hostess and a kind hearted woman who doted on her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and great grand-nieces and great grand-nephews. She made time for everyone and always had a kind and encouraging word. Her gentle and loving nature extended to animals which she adored including her beloved dogs, Penny and Cherie.
Her husband, Thomas Metz, predeceased her on November 25, 2015. She is survived by her sisters Evelyn McGlaughlin of Fairfield, PA and Janet Currens of New Oxford, PA. Numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and great grand-nieces and great grand-nephews also survive her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 5, 2017 at 12:30 PM from St. Francis Catholic Church, High Street, Gettysburg with Fr. Daniel Mitzel celebrant. Interment will be in Fairfield Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 11:30 AM until the time of the Mass.
