Obituary for Frank H. Fissel, Jr.
Frank H. Fissel, Jr., 85, of Gettysburg, PA died Thursday evening, February 11, 2016 at the Brethren Home Community, New Oxford, PA.
Born February 6, 1931 in McKnightstown, PA he was the son of the late Frank H. and Annie C. (Carl) Fissel, Sr. He was the husband of Helen M. (McDannell) Fissel, of Gettysburg to whom he was married to for 63 years.
Mr. Fissel was a member of Memorial Baptist Church in Gettysburg. He was a career military man starting by serving in the PA National Guards in the PFC Cavalry from 1947-1948 before beginning his active duty in the Air Force from 1948-1968 where he was Air Police/Recruiter as well as a Technical Sergeant. During his career he received the following Medals, Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and three Bronze OLC. When he retired after his 20 years of service he joined the Air Force Reserves for 10 years from 1968-1978 and worked for the Department of Defense as a civilian in Ft. Ritchie, MD as General Supply Specialist where he received many accolades for his performance. Frank was a 1948 graduate of Gettysburg High School where he lettered “G” in track and completed the Pennsylvania State University’s Management Development School in 1970. He received a certificate of appreciation from the American National Red Cross for his volunteer service given during the disaster “Eloise” in September of 1975.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his for children, Frank H. Fissel, III and his wife Sharon, of Aspers, PA, Stephen C. Fissel and his wife Marci, of St. Thomas, PA, Terri L. Hershey and her husband David, of Orrtanna, PA, Michele D. Stoner, of Gettysburg, PA, 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, one sister, Martha Harbaugh-Lehman, of Gettysburg, PA, as well as a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six siblings, Marie Showers, George Fissel, Robert Fissel, Darlene Crawford, Mary Ellen Monn, and Joseph Fissel.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Memorial Baptist Church, 1096 Biglerville Rd., Gettysburg with Rev. Steven Baker officiating. Burial with full military honors being presented by the Adams County Allied Veterans will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM, Wednesday evening, February 17, 2016 at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg as well as an hour before the services Thursday morning at the church.
