Obituary for George L. Carter, Jr.
Dr. George L. Carter, Jr., 86, Gettysburg, PA died Monday, December 17, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family.
He was born September 17, 1932 in Springfield, MA the son of the late George L. and Frances Howard Carter, Sr. George is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joan “Butch” Seymour Carter.
Following graduation from Catonsville High School, MD., Dr. Carter enlisted in the US Navy serving during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, George began his career at Westinghouse. During his many years with Westinghouse, George earned a degree in Industrial Management at the University of Baltimore, then a Doctor of Laws from the University of Baltimore and finally a Master’s Degree in Business Management from Mount St. Mary’s University. While at Westinghouse he held many positions, one of them being named General Manager at their Gettysburg Elevator Plant, retiring as manager of the sociotechnical engineering for Westinghouse Defense Manufacturing Systems and Technology. He also held professorial positions at the University of Maryland and Mt. St. Mary’s. George enjoyed fishing and golfing but most importantly love time spent with his family.
In addition to his wife, Dr. Carter is survived by a son, Shawn M. Carter and his wife Wanda of Sykesville, MD, a daughter, Colleen D. Carter of Catonsville, MD, four grandchildren; Dr. Shawn M. Carter, Jr. and his wife Marissa, Dr. Kevin P. Carter and his wife Dr. Rebecca Carter, Aileen C. Zimmerman-Garcia and her husband Hector Garcia, John R. Zimmerman, seven great grandchildren; Blake Carter, Finley Carter, Kellan Carter, Crosby Carter, Sienna Carter, Kipp Garcia, Viviana Garcia, and two sisters; Priscilla “Penny” Flynn of Parkville, MD, Janet Farinholt of Arkansas. He was predeceased by a son, Kevin L. Carter.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, 924 North Colonial Avenue, York, PA 17403.
