Obituary for George Michael Young

George M. “Mike” Young, 82, Gettysburg, PA passed away, with family at his side, Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at the York Hospital.

He was born December 15, 1941 in Chambersburg, PA the son of the late Elder George and Eleanor Winifred Shaffer Young. Mike is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gwendolyn Greene Young.

Mike was a member of and elder at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Gettysburg, PA. He was a 1959 graduate of Chambersburg High School. From 1962 thru 1966 he was a volunteer at the former World Headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses (Bethel) in Brooklyn, NY. For most of his career he was a meat cutter at both Meadow Valley in Gettysburg, PA and Jubilee Foods in Emmitsburg, MD and various other locations. His true passion, however, was preaching to and teaching people about the Bible and about his God, Jehovah (www.jw.org). Over the past 68 years he has touched the lives of many people. Mike was well loved by many and a spiritual father to many. Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He also liked to watch baseball and football. But most of all he loved spending time with his family particularly his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by three children; Christine Wolfgang and her husband Michael of Gettysburg, PA, Deborah Brown and her husband Sean of Waynesboro, PA, M. Brent Young and his wife Amy of Gettysburg, PA, six grandchildren; Ryan Wolfgang and his wife Donna, Elijah Young and his wife McKenzie, Spencer Brown and his wife Sydney, Nathanael Young, Darren Brown and his wife Sierra, and Kylie Young, two great grandchildren; Raymond Wolfgang and Lylah Wolfgang, and his closest friend of 75 years, Barry Metz of Waynesboro, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the English Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses (https://donate.jw.org/ui/E/donate-home.html#/donate/CONG).
