Obituary for George W. Marinos
George W. Marinos, 88, of Gettysburg, PA died Friday morning, August 4, 2017 at Transitions Healthcare, Gettysburg, PA.
Born August 23, 1928 on Front St., in Sunbury, PA he was the son of the late Speros P. and A. Catherine (Fenton) Marinos. He was married 63 years to the late Alberta I. (Horne) Marinos who died in October 2013. He was preceded in death by two brothers Peter Marinos and Demetrius Marinos.
Mr. Marinos was a Veteran of the United States Army serving from 1950-1952 in the Korean War. He was in the 176 AFA BN, Battery B. During his deployment he was Sergeant, Chief of section for his M-7 Priest, self-propelled tank. As a young man, he helped his father, Speros P. Marinos, operate the Waffle Grille restaurant in Bloomsburg, PA. Speros P. was the 2nd generation candy maker with George W. as 3rd generation. The Marinos Candy family tradition has now passed on to Speros G. and his son George S. Candy is now made in Gettysburg, PA. George W. did help with some dipping this year. He was also a founding member of the Bloomsburg ambulance club. He was a fire policeman often directing traffic at the 5 road intersection near the fire hall. His greatest passion was collecting military war relics. In 1963 he moved his family to Gettysburg to own and operate the Battlefield Military Museum. He had the building built to house his collection and to be opened for the battle centennial. The museum is still in operation today. His entire collection is one of the finest personal collections of military war relics in the United States. It was a blessing for him to be able to turn his passion into a profession with the help of his wife and family. He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Gettysburg.
George is survived by his two children, Speros Marinos and wife Nancye, of Gettysburg, PA, and Georgia Hollabaugh and husband Neil, of Biglerville, PA and 2 grandchildren, George S. Marinos and Wayne A. Hollabaugh and wife Rachael and 1 great grandson, Bennett A. Hollabaugh.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 11:00am at Trinity United Church of Christ, 60 E. High Street, Gettysburg, PA., 17325. The family will be receiving visitors beginning at 10:30 am. There will be a private burial at the convenience of the family in the Evergreen Cemetery. The Monahan Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements and online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
