Obituary for Gilbert "Gil" Evans
Gilbert “Gil” Evans, Jr., 90, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg, PA died Thursday, April 27, 2017 at his home.
He was born July 9, 1926 on Staten Island, NY, the son of the late Gilbert and Gladys DeForest Evans. Gil is survived by his wife, Anne Carolyn Massa Evans.
Gil was a graduate of Curtis High School, Staten Island, NY and then entered the US Army Air Corp serving during World War II. On returning from the service he attended Wagner College, became was an associate in his father’s electrical contracting business and, in 1949, married Anne. He designed and built their first house on Staten Island. Having long wanted to live in the country, he moved to a Gettysburg farm in 1960. In 1966, he joined Adams Electric Cooperative where he worked for 25 years in staff and management roles in the Member Services department. He retired in 1992.
Gil was actively involved in the community including Gettysburg Rotary Club, local and state Pennsylvania Association of Farmer Cooperatives, Gettysburg Chamber of Commerce, Pennsylvania Young Farmers Association, 4-H Clubs of Adams County Board president, member and club leader, Future Farmers of America, ASPCA Board member and Mt Joy Township Planning Commission. Gil was a member of Prince of Peace Episcopal Church, Gettysburg, PA, and a third-generation member of the Great Kills Masonic Lodge No. 912. He enjoyed his family, reading, golf, horses, remodeling his Civil War vintage farmhouse, and designing and building his last house on the farm.
In addition to his wife, Gil is survived by a son, G. Glenn Evans and his wife Patricia of Gilroy, CA, a daughter, Amy Evans McClure and her husband Michael of Oakland, CA, three grandchildren; Brian Evans, Matthew Evans, Amanda Evans and a sister, Jean Stewart of Pompton Plains, NJ.
