Obituary for Grover Earl Thompson

Grover Earl Thompson, 93 of Gettysburg, PA died Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at SpiriTrust Lutheran – The Village at Gettysburg. Born June 25, 1922 in Gettysburg, he was the son of the late G. Earl & Corrinne (Poist) Thompson. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dorothy May Thompson. He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy Allison Thompson who died in 1976 and his son, Stephen Thompson who died in 1974. Grover graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1940 and was a graduate of Thompson Business College. He enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps in 1941, serving with the 4th Marine Signal Corps spending 21 months in the Pacific Theatre making beach head landings on Roi Namur; Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima where he saw the raising of the United States Flag on Mt. Suribachi on Feb. 23, 1945. Having grown up in his parent’s restaurant as a child, he and his first wife founded The Avenue Diner on Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg in 1958 and operated the diner until it was sold in June of 1976, unfortunately his first wife died a month later. Grover was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, 64 year member of Good Samaritan Lodge #336 F&AM, 50+ year member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Consistory of Harrisburg, life member of: 4th Marine Division, Marine Corps League Battlefield Detachment, VFW Post #15, American Legion Post #202 and a honorary member of the Old Dominion Chapter #3, 4th Marine Division of Quantico, VA. He was a member of the Grand Slam Club of North American Sheep Hunters Association, he became only the 2nd person in Pennsylvania and 72nd member overall to belong to the Grand Slam Club of Big Horn Sheep. Grover loved hunting and bagged his last deer at the age of 91. He enjoyed golfing and has had 2 holes-in-one and remain active with the game into his 90’s. His other memberships included; AARP, Golden Age Passport and was a former Board Member of the Evergreen Cemetery. In addition to his wife, Grover is survived by twin daughters; Linda C. Thompson and Rita L. Townsend both of Camp Hill, PA, step-daughter, Catherine A. Aker of Frederick, MD, step-son, Stephen W. Myers and wife Teri of Cashtown, PA, grandson, Ronnie Townsend and wife Linda, great granddaughter, Katie Townsend, step-grandchildren; Jessica Myers, Lauren Lee and husband Jae and Alyson Yetsko and husband Adam and step-great grandsons, Brandon Myers and Henry Lee. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York St., Gettysburg with Revs. Michael Allwein and Andrew Geib, officiating. Burial with full military honors provided by the Adams County Allied Veterans Asso. will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. There will be a viewing on Friday, May 13 from 6-8 p.m. at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg and on Saturday at the church from 10-11 a.m. A Masonic Service will be held at the funeral home on Friday evening at 8:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials to: St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York St., Gettysburg, PA 17325 and SpiriTrust Lutheran – The Village at Gettysburg, 1075 Old Harrisburg Rd., Gettysburg, PA l7325.
