Obituary for Hannah Grace Teeter
Hannah Grace (Neely) Teeter, age 96, died peacefully on October 4, 2016 at the Gettysburg Hospital. She was the wife of the late Daniel E. Teeter, former District Attorney of Adams County (1948-1964), who died in 1990.
Born April 30, 1920 on the family farm near Fairfield, Hannah was the fourth of eight children of Donald H. Neely and Anna (Weaver) Neely. All of her siblings, Mary Alice Eckert, of Gettysburg, Helen N. White, of Florence, Alabama, Isabella Wills, of Gettysburg, Jane Freeman, of Tampa, Florida, Donald Neely, Jr., of Pittsburgh, Agnes Crawford, of Los Angeles, and Robert Neely, of Fairfield, and their spouses predeceased her, except her sister-in-law, Carolyn (Mrs. Robert) Neely.
Valedictorian of the 1938 class of Fairfield High School and 1939 graduate of Chambersburg Business College, Hannah worked as a legal secretary prior to her marriage to Dan in 1942. She accompanied him during his stateside military assignments until he was deployed overseas, when she began work at the National Institute of Health in Washington, D.C. Following Dan’s return from the War and his re-opening of his law practice, Hannah devoted her energy and attention to raising their family.
She is survived by her four sons, John N. Teeter, of Monterrey, Mexico, Robert G. Teeter and Samuel E. Teeter, both of Gettysburg, and David H. Teeter, of Seattle, Washington and their respective spouses, Emma L. Gonzalez, Marilyn M. Teeter, Linda J. Teeter and Dorothy F. Teeter, and by her eleven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She devoted her life to her family and to raising and educating her four sons. After her sons began their own careers, she dedicated herself to her larger family, her daughters-in-law, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren and her and Dan’s extended families. She was the last survivor of Dan’s seven siblings and their spouses.
As a mother and later a grandmother, she supported and followed the interests, activities, passions and friendships of her sons, grandchildren and, more recently, her great grandchildren, always eager to see the most recent pictures of her growing family. She was an avid sports fan, especially of her beloved Baltimore Orioles, whose resurgence in recent years rekindled her excitement about the team. She enjoyed the friendships she made and sustained over the years participating in several ladies’ bridge groups. She remained interested in local and national politics and was a faithful voter.
She served as an Elder and Deacon of Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, where she was a lifelong member, and also had the privilege of serving as a church representative to the Carlisle Presbytery, a women’s convention of the United Presbyterian Church, and the Board of Directors of the Gilliland Home. Hannah also was a longtime member of the Gettysburg Women’s Club and served as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer.
A memorial service will be held at Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, 1865 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 8, 2016 with Rev. Troy Morgan officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, October 7th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Monahan’s Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle Street, Gettysburg, PA and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service.
