Obituary for Henry J. Backhus
Henry J. Backhus 84, 781 Old Route 30,Orrtanna passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017 at SpiriTrust Lutheran Home in Gettysburg, PA surrounded by his loving family.
He was born January 26, 1932 in Wilson, PA, the son of the late Henry and Louise Duyssen Backhus. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Arline Filippone Backhus.
Henry or "Buck" as he liked to be called, was a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Buchanan Valley. He was a devoted husband and doting father and grandfather. He and his wife lived most of their lives in New Jersey. First in East Rutherford where he was the self-employed owner of Atom Electric. Later, moving his family to Long Valley, New Jersey where he worked as an electrician for the M&M Mars Company in Hackettstown until his retirement. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Orrtanna, PA to be near his daughter, Gale, her husband, Mark, and their 3 children. He served in the US Navy aboard the USS New Jersey during the Korean conflict and remained in the Navy Reserves until 1992.
In addition to his wife, Henry is survived by a daughter, Gale E. Bream and her husband, Mark of Orrtanna, PA, four grandchildren: Katherine "Katie" Bream, Steven Bream, Holly Bream and Arlena Backhus. Mr. Backhus was predeceased by a son, David Backhus, two sisters: Elizabeth Zarello, Patricia Backhus and a brother, Robert Backhus.
