Obituary for James DeLorenzo

Capt. James DeLorenzo, USN, SC passed away peacefully on July 19, 2023 with his family by his side.

Jim was born on January 12, 1951 to Joseph and Mildred (DiLieto) DeLorenzo in New Haven, CT. He graduated from Hamden High School in 1969 and earned his bachelor’s degree from Quinnipiac College in Hamden, CT and his master’s degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA.

He retired after 41 years of service to his country in 2017, serving over 26 years as a Navy Supply Corps Officer and 15 years as Executive Director of Naval Supply Systems Command, Business Systems. This included tours aboard the USS Tarawa, USS Schofield, and USS Tripoli as well as duty stations from San Diego to Philadelphia before retiring in Gettysburg. His parents and the Navy taught him the importance of hard work and perseverance, lessons that he passed on to family and those that he mentored.

Jim’s memory will be cherished by countless people whose lives he touched, but especially his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dee (Garris) DeLorenzo; his daughter Maria and her children Eleni, Rhys and Isla Freeman; daughter Andrea, her husband Todd Tedrow, and their children Logan and Lillian; sister Maryan, and her partner Ward Sheehan; nephews Joseph Marenna and Anthony Marenna and his wife Cindy. Jim was their rock – calm and steady even in the most turbulent times.

In his retirement, Jim enjoyed traveling the world with Dee, especially when the itinerary included golf. He delighted in his status as the reigning club champion of the Links at Gettysburg, especially the reserved parking space perk. Jim adored spending time with his grandchildren and was equally at home playing sports and donning a tiara. He also enjoyed cooking Italian delicacies and sharing tales of his New Haven childhood.

Jim’s family will receive friends from 10:30 AM until noon on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA with the Adams County Allied Veterans performing full military honors at noon. Following the service at the funeral home there will be a celebration of his life at the Community Center at the Links of Gettysburg from 1-3 PM, Sunday afternoon. Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to First Tee in Jim’s memory -

Jim often commented that he was living the dream, and his dream will live forever in the hearts of those who knew him. Fair winds and following seas, Jimmy D.
