Obituary for Jean S. Holder
Jean S. Holder, 91 of Gettysburg passed away at her home on Sunday, November 11, 2018.
She was born February 21, 1927 in Abilene, Texas, the daughter of the late Marvin and Dora (Sanders) Gilley.
Her family subsequently moved to Fort Worth and later to Arlington, Texas, where Jean graduated from High School and later attended the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1948 she received a B.A. Degree in History and English from West Texas State University at Canyon, Texas. She was married in 1949 to the late Leonard I. Holder, while he attended graduate school at Texas A&M and Purdue University, Jean taught school in Texas and Indiana. In 1955 they moved they moved to San Jose, California, where Leonard taught mathematics at San Jose University.
In 1964 they moved to Gettysburg where Leonard was Chairman of the Mathematics Department at Gettysburg College. After teaching sixth and seventh grade at St. Francis Xavier School in Gettysburg for two years, Jean began a graduate program at American University in Washington, D.C., receiving her M.A. Degree in History in 1975 and her Ph.D. in 1983. She subsequently taught History and first year Colloquy at Gettysburg College. Her dissertation on the presidency of John Adams was published in part in Political Science Quarterly, and she had an entry on John Adams published by invitation, in the Encyclopedia of the United States Congress.
After her retirement, Jean served as a volunteer in various community organizations. She was a member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, where she coordinated the church’s support of the local Soup Kitchen, served on the Peacemaking Committee and as a church Deacon. Jean was a member of the Gettysburg Garden Club, the Gettysburg Hospital Auxiliary, Adams County Arts Council and other community organizations. She had served for fourteen years as an Art Information volunteer at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Jean is survived by her two sons, William L. Holder of Middletown, Connecticut and Stephen A. Holder of Eugene, Oregon, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Jean was predeceased by her sister, Joy Louise King.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 30, 2018 at the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St. Gettysburg with the Rev. Dr. David Wright, officiating. A private interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. The family will receive friends at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. The family suggests memorials to the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St. Gettysburg, PA 17325.
