Obituary for John C. Kunkel, Sr.
John C. Kunkel, Sr., 92, 2524 Chambersburg Road, Biglerville, PA died Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the York Hospital surrounded by family.
He was born May 8, 1924 in Mummasburg, PA the son of the late Harry E. and Leila Rice Kunkel. John’s wife Betty Ullman Kunkel died in 2004.
John was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. He attended Arendtsville Vocational High School. Then John worked on the family farm and later became a long haul independent truck driver. Toward the end of his career he worked for the US Postal Service transporting mail between local Post Offices and later retired as the Water Treatment Operator for the Cumberland Township Sewer Authority.
He was a Charter Member of the Cashtown Lions Club, recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow and Lion of the Year awards and assisted with the care of the Cashtown Lions Park. John was a member of the Gettysburg Elks Club, the Adams County Fish & Game Association and Adams County Grange Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and Bluegrass music. In their younger years, John and Betty enjoyed bowling, were 4-H Club leaders and members of the South Mountain Horse Riding Club.
John had a special gift training horses along with an innate ability interacting with dogs. He also thoroughly enjoyed every conversation with his many county-wide “breakfast buddies” throughout the years.
John is survived by five children: Judy Ketterman of Gettysburg, PA, John Kunkel, Jr. and his wife Audrey of Conway, SC, Patsy Hartzell and her husband Ron of Mifflinburg, PA, Jim Kunkel and his wife Cathy of Gettysburg, PA, Anna Thompson and her husband Jay of Orrtanna, PA; ten grandchildren: Guy Ketterman and his wife Ann, Greg Ketterman and his wife Kymberlee, Beth Chaplin and her husband Jimmy, Tim Kunkel and his fiancé Jennifer Cooper, Nathan Kunkel and his wife Veronica, Neil Hartzell and his wife Julie, Lance Hartzell, Hillarie Hartzell and her fiancé Ron Laino, Ryan Kunkel and his wife Ashlee, Carrie Hicks and her husband Doug; nineteen great-grandchildren: Jenna Craigie, Erin Ketterman, Elise Ketterman, Landis Ketterman, Katelyn Chaplin, Emily Chaplin, Jimmy Chaplin, Stefano Tabri, Ivan Kunkel, Gabriel Kunkel, Brad
Hartzell, Jessica Hartzell, Raeleigh Hartzell, Levi Hartzell, Tre Fike, Natalee Kunkel, Braden Kunkel, Jozy Hicks, Skyler Hicks; one great-great granddaughter, Kensington Craigie; a sister, Margaret “Peggy” Taughinbaugh of Gettysburg, PA and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Jane Kane.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 20, 2017 at 11:00 AM from Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Michael Allwein officiating. Interment will be in Greenmount Cemetery, Arendtsville, PA. There will be a viewing at the funeral home on Thursday, January 19, 2017 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM and on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Cashtown Lions Club, PO Box 144, Cashtown, PA 17310.
