Obituary for John D. Smarsh

John D. Smarsh, 85, of Gettysburg, PA passed away on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at the Wellspan Gettysburg Hospital.

Born October 10, 1937 in Chambersburg, PA to the late Joseph Smarsh and Ruth (Dice) Smarsh.

John graduated from Chambersburg High School then immediately went on to Shippensburg University and later to McDaniel College (formerly Western Maryland University) to receive his Masters Degree. After graduating John became a history teacher at Bermudian Springs High School where he participated in many programs, including coaching football. He then went on to become the principal of Littlestown High School and eventually became the Superintendent of Littlestown School District. John was a history enthusiast and was a Battlefield tour guide in Gettysburg for 52 years and was also an avid collector of military memorabilia. He also worked seasonally at the National Park Service for a number of years. He also served his country with pride in the Army National Guard. John was a member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Elder there.

John is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Carolyn (Small) Smarsh; his children, Leslie Smarsh (Bill Lindsley), Eric Smarsh (Tammy), Thomas Smarsh (Kelly), and Susan (Smarsh) Sanders; 8 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Patricia Rose (Ken).

In addition to his parents, John is predeceased by his brothers, Robert Smarsh and Joseph Smarsh.

There will be a celebration of life service at Gettysburg Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at 11:00am. A luncheon will take place at the church immediately following the service.
