Obituary for John H. Tanner, Jr.
John Hutchins Tanner, Jr. of New Oxford, PA went to be with his Lord on August 5, 2017. Born on October 11, 1948 in Washington, DC. He was the son of the late John H. Tanner and Agnes I. Tanner. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Carolyn M. Tanner.
He was proceeded in death by his son Christopher Glenn Tanner of New Oxford, PA.
John graduated from Wheaton High School and attended the University of Maryland receiving an AA degree.
John was proud to be an Eagle Scout. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He worked for the Godard Space Flight Center in the computer division. He served as a Montgomery County Maryland Police Officer from 1971 until he was injured in the line of duty and retired in 1985. He then opened J.H. Tanner Construction Co. He closed his business in 2005 due to health issues.
He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. He also enjoyed collecting classic cars.
John is survived by three sister's Sandra Puryear and brother-in- law Eric Puryear, of Bumpass, VA, Victoria Saltzman and brother-in-law Scott Saltzman of Williamstown, MA, Jill Ewing and brother-in-law Douglas Ewing of Gaithersburg, MD. One sister-in-law Sandra S. Edwards of Gettysburg, PA. Ten nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held 7:00 PM, Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA with the Rev. Joel Everhart officiating. Family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until the time of the services Wednesday at the funeral home. In addition there will be a viewing Friday, August 11, 2017 from 10-11 AM at the Union Chapel United Methodist Church, 145 Rock Church Lane, Boydton, VA with services at 11:00 AM and burial at the church cemetery. The Farrar Funeral Home, 1260 N. Mecklenburg St., South Hill, VA will be conducting services in Virginia. Online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
