Obituary for Karl L. Burkhardt
Karl L. Burkhardt, 80 of Gettysburg, PA passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at his home after a long illness.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on August 1, 1936, he was the son of the late Herman K. Anna M. (Hall) Burkhardt. Mr. Burkhardt was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Barbara L. (Carback) Burkhardt. He spent his childhood years in Brooklyn, NY and graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in 1954. Karl worked for several years at the Hamburg Savings Bank in Brooklyn before entering Gettysburg College as a full time student in 1957, graduating in 1961. Upon graduation, he went on active duty with the U. S. Army for two years as a result of an ROTC commission. During his college years he meet the love of his life and future wife, Barbara Lee Carback. She was the daughter of the late Milton P. and Margaret Carback. They were married on June 23, 1962 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Thurmont, MD. Whereupon she joined him at his active duty station at Fort Knox, KY. Upon Karl’s completion of active duty in 1964 they bought and made their home in Gettysburg. Karl worked for many years for Knouse Foods Coop at their Peach Glen Plant and Barbara taught High School English in Biglerville, PA until her retirement in 1995.
Karl was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Gettysburg from 1964-1980 at which time he transferred his membership to St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg until present. Karl was active in the community for many years, serving as a Cumberland Township Auditor, member of American Legion Post #202 in Gettysburg, Good Samaritan Masonic Lodge in Gettysburg, the former Gettysburg Elks Lodge and the Upper Adams Fish and Game Association. He and his late wife, Barbara were members of the Cannonaders Square Dance Club for forty years, they jointly held many positions with the Cannonaders including serving three terms as presidents of the organization.
Karl is survived by his sister-in-law, Nancy Riffle and husband William of Thurmont, MD, two nieces; Lisa Riffle of Thurmont and Julie Riffle of Baltimore, MD, nephew, Jim Riffle of Smithsburg, MD and a great niece, Jesse Grub of West Virginia. In addition to his wife and parents, Karl was predeceased by his step-father, Henry W. Schatt.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2017 at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York Street, Gettysburg, PA with his pastor, Rev. Michael Allwein, officiating. A viewing will be held on Friday at the church from 9:30-11:00 a.m. A reception in the church’s dining room will follow the funeral service.
