
Obituary for Leo F. Smith, Sr.
Leo F. Smith, Sr., 99, Mt. Hope Road, Fairfield, PA died Monday, April 29, 2019 at Paramount Home, Fayetteville, PA.
He was born December 27, 1919 in Baltimore, MD the son of the late Leo and Nellie Neary Smith. Mr. Smith’s wife Thelma Ritenour Smith died in 1985.
As a young man, Leo started out as a steelworker for Glen L. Martin Industries in Baltimore, MD and worked his way up to become crew chief of the airplane mechanic’s shop. At the beginning of World War II he enlisted in the US Army and served as a Drill Sergeant stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Following his service he returned to Glen L. Martin and built missile silos around the Midwest. After his retirement he worked for Stahle Company in Jarrettsville, MD. Leo enjoyed hunting and golf, playing until he was 96 years old.
Mr. Smith is survived by a daughter, Patricia Hoyt and her husband Robert of Fairfield, PA, a son, Leo F. Smith, Jr. of Tullahoma, TN, two grandchildren; Theresa Stahle, and James Oscar Stahle, III.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, Timonium, MD at 11:30 AM with Fr. Larry Johnson officiating.
