Obituary for Lillian Hobbs Harner
Lillian Harner passed away on November 19, 2017. She was born April 22, 1936 in Fairfield PA. She is survived by her husband of over 62 years, Paul Harner. Their only child, Michael, died in May of 2003 at the age of 37 from Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She was one of Zita and Raymond Hobb’s 16 children, 11 of whom are still living – Carolyn Lydon, Ann Marie McCleaf, Agatha Foscato, Corona Naylor, Angela Parrish, Linda Steinle, Janen Hobbs, Michael Hobbs, Karl Hobbs, Paul Hobbs and Larry Hobbs. Her deceased siblings are Mary Catherine Havers, Rose Zita Herring Bream, Martha Bravo and Joe Hobbs.
Lillian was a great wife, a loving mother, a devout Catholic, and a rabid Yankees Baseball fan. She loved playing tennis, bridge and socializing with her family and friends. She was heralded by her youngest sister as the bridge between the older and younger siblings as evidenced by her frequent trips to Las Vegas for a little blackjack with her two youngest sisters. She also loved to travel, having visited over 50 countries and 46 states. Her favorite trips included Citizen Ambassador Program sponsored trips to Russia and China and a Catholic Travel Organization sponsored trip to the Holy Land.
Lil worked part-time as a nurse’s aide for Women’s Physicians in Shady Grove, MD. But her most enjoyable work was as a volunteer worker for the Seton Center Thrift Shop in Emmitsburg, MD. She also was a member of the Sodality of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Emmitsburg and the funeral luncheon director for a few years until her health became an issue.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on, Saturday, November 25, 2017 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Emmitsburg, MD at 11:00 AM with Fr. Charles Kreig celebrant. There will be a viewing at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass. Interment will be private. Online obituary and condolences can be made at monahanfuneralhome.com. Flowers are appreciated; but donations to St. Joseph’s at 47 DePaul St., P.O. Box 376 Emmitsburg, MD 21747, in Lil’s memory would be preferable.
