Obituary for Louis F. Westfall
Louis F. Westfall, 87, 280 Friendship Lane, Gettysburg, PA passed away on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at the Village of Laurel Run.
Louis was born June 13, 1928 in South Bend, IN the son of the late George and Alma Westfall. He moved to Decatur, IL when he was 9 months old. He attended Decatur Public schools graduating in 1946. He attended Bradley University, Peoria, IL for 2 years and graduated from Millikin University, Decatur, IL and later received his Master’s degree.
Lou and Carolyn (Wilson) Westfall were married August 19, 1956 in the First Baptist Church, Mattoon, IL. They resided in Decatur, IL until 1994 when they moved to Gettysburg, PA.
He and Carolyn were school teachers in the Decatur Illinois Public School system for 38 years. He taught American History and English in the middle schools, and GED classes in summer school for several years. One year he received the “Outstanding Teacher” award. He was a member of several teacher’s organizations.
He was an excellent swimmer and was Water Front Director for the Phantom Lake YMCA camps for 5 summers in Wisconsin.
He faithfully and honorably served his country in the US Army during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart.
He was an avid reader of the Civil War books and therefore they had visited 53 U.S. Battlefields. They also enjoyed their several travels in Europe.
He was an active member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church. Lou was a docent at the Eisenhower Historical Site for 14 years.
Funeral services will be held Monday, May 16, 2016 at 2:00 PM from the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. David Wright officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg, PA. There will be a viewing at the church on Monday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg, PA or Melmark, Special Education School, 2600 Wayland Road, Berwyn, PA 19312.
