Obituary for Margaret Jane Keyser
Margaret Jean Keyser, 77 died on Monday, October 9th at her home surrounded by her family. Born in Lancaster, PA on August 26th, 1940, she grew up in Strasburg, PA and was the daughter of Rodney Mayhew and Catharine Morris (who died when she was 4) and Dorothy Mayhew. She graduated with a BS in Nursing from the Ohio State University in 1962, and began her nursing career Philadelphia. She worked as a visiting nurse in Philadelphia and Gettysburg before spending more than 30 years as a member of the nursing staff at Gettysburg Hospital.
Her marriage of 56 years to husband Reverend E. Edward Keyser was a loving partnership and inspiration to her family and friends. She was a source of joy, love and kindness and was a powerful and constant presence in the lives of her four children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
She was a faithful and active member of St. James Lutheran Church since 1967. She loved singing in the Adult Choir, volunteering with Care Givers, health and wellness initiatives, and many other activities that involved serving the church and surrounding community.
Upon her retirement in 2002, she dedicated much of her time to giving back to people in the community that she loved. In addition to her involvement with St James, she taught First Aid and CPR for the American Heart Association, volunteered her time at the Office of the Aging in working with the APRISE and Tax preparation programs, the Holiday Family Outreach, Community Health Initiative, and at the Majestic Theater where she was a volunteer usher. She continued to serve with many of these organizations up until the last few months.
She is survived by her husband, Reverend E. Edward Keyser; siblings Robert Mayhew of Rosharon, TX, Betty McCoy of Lancaster, PA, and Carol Wenger of Lancaster, PA, and sister-in-law Virginia Mayhew of Lakewood, OH, four children - Beth Chandler and husband Ken of Mount Joy PA, Andrew Keyser and wife Julie of Gettysburg, Will Keyser and wife Eileen of Boston MA, and Heidi Armonda and husband Rocco of Silver Spring MD, 15 grandchildren – Joshua and Keri Chandler, Luke, Evan, and Ethan Keyser, Jackson, Vivian, Samuel, and Lila Keyser, Gabriella, Madison, Emma, Michael, Michelle, and Adrianna Armonda and 2 great grandchildren – Landon and Calvin Chandler. She was predeceased by a brother Charles of Lakewood, OH.
A service celebrating the life of Margaret Keyser will be held at St James Lutheran Church 109 York Street in Gettysburg PA at 11 am on Saturday, October 14th. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8pm on Friday October 13th at St James Lutheran Church.
