Obituary for Margaret Jean Mattson
Margaret Jean Mattson, age 80, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania died on June 21st at York Hospital surrounded by her husband and three daughters.
Born March 4, 1936 in Chicago Illinois to Ruth and Woodruff Almlof, she is survived by her husband of 59 years, Karl Mattson.
Margaret graduated from North Park Academy in Chicago and with a Bachelor's degree in English from Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. She taught Language Arts in Los Angeles, California; Rock Island, Illinois; Branford, Connecticut; Brooklyn, New York; Hyde Park, Illinois; and for more than 20 years at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Margaret loved to teach grammar, composition, bake bread, make clothes and Halloween costumes for her children and grandchildren, read and entertain.
She is also survived by her daughters, Martha Inch (Frank Michels) of Orcas Island, Washington, Kristin Mattson (Carl Ashford) of Omaha, Nebraska and Katy Mattson (Andy Knox) of Biglerville, Pennsylvania; her grandchildren, Joshua Inch, Molly Ashford and Noah Mattson; and her brother, John Almlof of Tallahassee Florida. She is preceded in death by her grandson, Nathan Ashford.
A memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock pm on June 26th at the Gettysburg College Christ Chapel. All are invited to celebrate her life with the family at the Mattson's, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Francis Xavier Catholic School to be used for scholarships for spanish speaking students.
