Obituary for Margaret "Peg" Smith
Margaret B. “Peg” Smith died March 20, 2016 at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village in Gettysburg. She was born in Lancaster PA on September 6, 1926, daughter of the late Henry E. and Margaret J. (Winnerling) Bable. Following the death of her mother in 1932 and father in 1938, Peg moved to Gettysburg to be raised by her father’s sister, the late Helen L (Bable) Snyder and husband Robert P Snyder, eventually being legally adopted as their daughter. She graduated from Gettysburg High School and the Union Memorial Hospital of Nursing in Baltimore, MD. Peg specialized in home nursing traveling to many homes in Adams County throughout her nursing career. She was employed by the Gettysburg Civic Nurse Association in 1960 which became the Adams County Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) in 1966. In 1974 she became Director of the Adams County VNA and retired in 1984. She was the high school sweetheart and wife of the late S. Charles Smith, a U.S. Army World War II Veteran who died in November 2006. During retirement, Peg and Charles spent time visiting family in Georgia, Texas and California also taking many bus trips throughout the U.S., Canada and many destinations in Europe. While at home she enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, spending time with her friends, family and attending church activities. She enjoyed playing bridge, reading and solving crossword puzzles. She was a 75 year member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Gettysburg.
Mrs. Smith is survived by three sons; Stephen C. Smith and his wife Maria of Plano, TX, Michael R. Smith and his wife Linda of Bonneauville, PA, Mark H. Smith and wife Dawn of Douglasville, GA, five grandchildren, Aimee Schmitt and husband Mike of Lebanon, PA, Christina Smith of Dallas Texas, Daniel Smith and wife Michelle of Fort Collins, CO, Mackenzie Smith and wife Alyssa of Fairfield, PA and Zachary Smith of Douglasville, GA, great grandchildren, Solomon, Jude, Olivia, Kenton, Severn, one brother, William H. Snyder and wife Marlene of Pacific Palisades, CA, her beloved niece, Terri Snyder Vitar, wife Kim and daughter Paloma of Los Angeles, CA.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 8th at 11:00 AM at SpiriTrust, 1075 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at SpiriTrust on Friday from 10: AM until the time of the service.
