Obituary for Mary C. Kessel
Mary C. (Bollinger) Kessel, 92 of Fairfield, PA died Saturday, March 26 at her home.

Born August 7, 1923 in Gettysburg, PA she was the daughter of the late Maurice & Alice (Bigham) Bollinger. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Elton L. Kessel, who died in 2008 and her four siblings; John W. Bollinger, Charles L. Bollinger, Sr., Anna E. Thompson, and Caroline B. Kump, and their spouses.

She graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1941 and was very active keeping in touch with her classmates. She was a Girl Scout leader in Gettysburg and she and her husband helped with the Boys Scouts in Richmond, VA. Mary was an active volunteer serving at the Fort Knox, KY Veterans Hospital, McGuire Veterans Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, VA. She sang alto in her church choir, Welborne United Methodist Church. Mary knitted all her life, making sweater sets for babies, scarves, pray shawls, afghans, lap robes and caps for cancer patients in Richmond, caps for newborns in Gettysburg and sweaters and hats for her beloved great granddaughter, Hannah Grace Beck. Visitors were always welcome at her “Do Drop Inn” and when they left she always said “Write”.

Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne K. Weeks, son Elton L. Kessel, Jr. and wife Donna both of Richmond, VA, granddaughter, Sarah E. Beck and husband Jon, great granddaughter Hannah and brother-in-law and wife, Alex and Jane Kessel of Fairfield, PA. Mary was fortunate to have many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends who visited her and helped her in many ways. You know who you are and she was very grateful.

A Memorial Service for Mary will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 1, 2016 at the Gettysburg United Methodist Church, 30 West High St., Gettysburg with the Rev. Jay Zimmerman, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday at the church from 10:00-11:00 AM. A private burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Gettysburg. The Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements, online tributes and condolences can be made at monahanfuneralhome.com. The family would like to thank the health care providers for their kind attention to her needs and Hospice for their always helpful time and caring. She was lucky to have the same Hospice nurse, Connie, who also cared for her husband.
