Obituary for Mary J. Baskerville
Mary J. Pennino Baskerville, 87, of Gettysburg, died December 10, 2017, at Gettysburg Hospital.
Born December 5, 1930, in New York City, she was the daughter of the late John A. and Carmela (Scarano) Pennino. She was the widow of the late Edward J. Baskerville.
Dr. Baskerville received her undergraduate degree from Hunter College in New York and her MA and PhD from Columbia University in New York. She taught in the New York City school system and the Gettysburg school system but spent most of her career as an adjunct professor at Gettysburg College teaching composition, introduction to literature, and philosophy.
Dr. Baskerville was an avid reader who had a passion for opera, ballet, and classical music. She was a long-time member of the Metropolitan Opera Guild and would frequently travel to New York to attend the opera and ballet. Dr. Baskerville also was an animal lover. She was a member of the Adams County SPCA and adopted many feral cats.
Dr. Baskerville is survived by her brother, John D. Pennino of New York City; her sister, Joanne Sylvester of West Palm Beach, Fla.; her son, Geoffrey H. Baskerville, and daughter-in-law, Virginia Bohn Baskerville, of Stratford, N.J.; two grandchildren, Caroline and David; and two great-grandchildren, Savannah and Bennett.
A memorial service will be held at St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg on June 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. until the start of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Project Gaia (projectgaia.com).
