Obituary for Mary (Wrenn) King
Mary (Wrenn) King 92, died on Sunday, November 11, 2018, at the Gettysburg Hospital. She was surrounded by many of her family and will be missed by all whose lives she has touched.
Mary was born July 23, 1926 in Washington, DC. She was the daughter of the late Francis Dennis Wrenn and Mary Esther Proctor. She was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Howell T. King, Jr. who died in 2015, one sister Ann Shirley Page and an infant brother. Eight great-great-grandchildren – Juliana, LJ, Carlos, Jakai, Akhilleus, Rylee, Phoenix and Kimora.
To her husband, she was his soul mate. They were best friends and they shared a love and faith envied by many, which was honest and enduring. To her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, she was a shining example of how to live a good, decent and honest life, a standard to which we aspire.
She was born and grew up in Washington, DC. She attended McFarland Jr. High and McKinley Tech High School. She worked her summers at the Intelligence Bureau and the IRS. In 1943 she met her future husband Howell (Porky) while mailing herself a letter near his house, ensuring herself an introduction. When she graduated, she was given a full scholarship to Strayer College, but left after one year to marry Howell who was in the Navy and stationed in Pensacola,Fl. They were married on August 1, 1945 and returned soon after the war ended to work at his father’s business The King Company. They purchased their first home in (Lewisdale) Hyattsville, MD in 1951 and lived there until retiring and moving permanently to Lake Heritage, Gettysburg, PA in 1985. She began working at C&P Telephone Company in 1954, where she rose through the ranks and became one of the first women to reach executive level in the company and retired in 1985 as the Director of Administrative Services and Executive Support.
She was in many activities and organizations: PCCW, The Harvest Club, Red Hats, and a Red Cross volunteer at the hospital for over twenty years. She was an avid bridge player and square danced for many years. She loved gardening and spending time with her multi-generational family. She never said “no” when being asked to give of her time for community and church activities. Mary was a beautiful gift to all of us and the wonderful memories will last forever. Her grandchildren will grow up having known and loved someone very special.
