Marysia Louise Kwast Hartz, 66, of Emmitsburg, MD passed away on April 25, 2017

Marysia Louise Kwast Hartz was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee to Chester and Sylvianee Kwast. After graduating from the University of Maryland in elementary education she became a beloved and highly respected elementary school teacher in Montgomery County public schools. Mrs. Hartz was known for her profound love for and commitment to her students, her extraordinary patience, and her ability to teach successfully students across the full range of abilities. Many students stayed in touch as they grew older and it was not unusual for her to teach the children of her former students. After almost 40 years of teaching Mrs. Hartz retired in 2011.

Mrs. Hartz grew up in Kensington, MD where she was an active member of the Kensington Baptist Church. In 1996 she married the Rev. Norm Hartz with whom she enjoyed 21 years of a loving and mutually supportive relationship. Together they delighted in ministering to senior citizens, traveling, being with family, and numerous other activities. They moved to Emmitsburg in 2004, and for many years have been members of the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church in Gettysburg, PA. There Mrs. Hartz continued her commitment to young people by serving as the Superintendent of the Sunday School program.

Mrs. Hartz is survived by her husband Norm, her brother Myron (Marlene) Kwast, her niece Katherine (Christian) Hedrick and their children Anneliese, Theodore and William, and her nephew Hayden (Rosalind) Kwast and their son Bodhi. A viewing for Marysia Hartz will be held at the Monahan Funeral Home at 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA 17325, on Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Marysia Hartz’ funeral service will be at the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church at 1865 Knoxlyn Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325 on Friday, May 5, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be followed immediately by a reception at the church. Interment will be at a later date for family only at the Parklawn Cemetery in Rockville, MD In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Marysia Hartz’ name to the Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church.
