Obituary for Ned D. Crouse
Ned D. Crouse, 86, 1110 Table Rock Road, Gettysburg, PA entered into eternal rest on June 7, 2017, at Transitions Healthcare, Gettysburg, PA. A Funeral Service will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Saturday June 17, 2017 at St. James Lutheran Church, 109 York Street, Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Michael Allwein officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, 799 Baltimore St, Gettysburg, PA. There will be a viewing at the Church from 12:30 PM until the time of the Service.
Ned was born February 5, 1931 in Harney, MD the son of the late Hobson and Pauline (Worley) Crouse. Mr. Crouse is survived by his beloved and devoted wife of 65 years, Joyce Waybright Crouse.
Ned was a lifelong resident of Gettysburg and a 1949 graduate of Gettysburg High School. He then entered the US Navy and served as an electronics technician in the Korean Conflict. Following his service to our Nation, he pursued his life-long vocation first as an electrician at Harry Spangler Electric and Hull’s Electric, and then in 1964, he and Joyce started Crouse Electric providing electrical contracting services throughout the area. Following Ned’s retirement in 1985, Crouse Electric Co. LLC. endures as a family owned and operated business.
Though driven by an extraordinary electrical/mechanical aptitude and customer service attitude to build a thriving business from scratch, Ned was also a bit of a folk artist which blossomed during his retirement. With a strong memory of growing up during the Depression in a family of 14 children, Ned saw treasure in materials he found at the Junk Yard, along the road or in his own shop. In his retirement years, he spent much of his time envisioning and creating holiday decorations, napkin holders, animal figurines, and ornaments with repurposed scrap items, metal and wire. His wire sculptures adorn the homes of friends and family and were the ever-popular gift for grandchildren when they came to visit. Ned’s art was inspired by his farming roots, travels to Japan and Korea while in the Navy, meals shared with family, and postcards sent by his grandchildren from around the world.
Ned was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, PA and a proud member of the Gettysburg Optimist Club.
In addition to his wife Joyce, Ned is survived by four children, Cathy Kunkel and her husband Jim of Gettysburg, PA, Tom Crouse and his wife Joni of Martinez, GA, Wesley Crouse and his wife Kim of Media, PA, Lori Klauber and her husband Roy of York, PA; eleven grandchildren, Jessica Crouse, Ryan Kunkel and his wife Ashlee, Jason Crouse, Carrie Hicks and her husband Doug, Emma Klauber, Peter Crouse, Ryan McManus and his wife Ashley, Grace Klauber, Marina Crouse, Taylor McManus, and Lilly Klauber; four great grandchildren, Natalee Kunkel, Jozy Hicks, Braden Kunkel, Skyler Hicks; brothers and sisters, Rhoda “Boots” Conover of Hanover, PA, Roger ”Larry” Crouse of Greeley, CO, Ted Crouse of New Oxford, PA, Tim Crouse of Gettysburg, PA and Irene Lawrence of Gettysburg, PA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers and sisters; Betty Baker, Fred Crouse, Bobby Crouse, Earl Crouse, Rita Warner, Ross Crouse, Jay Crouse, and Terry Crouse.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the SpiritTrust Hospice, 260 West High Street, Gettysburg, PA 17325 or St. James Lutheran Church, PO Box 4596, Gettysburg, PA 17325. Online obituary and condolences available at monahanfuneralhome.com.
