Obituary for Paul William Helwig
Paul William Helwig, age 96 of Gettysburg, PA passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at The Village of Laurel Run with his family by his side.
Born July 7, 1921 in Union Mills, Maryland he was the son of the late Charles David & Edna Grace (Coopersmith) Helwig, Sr. Paul was predeceased by his wife, Lorene G. (Koontz) Helwig, who died in 2002.
He was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Army Air Corp 409th Air Squadron Military Police. After World War II, he worked for many years with his family in the construction business, specializing in new home construction. He later went to work for the Home Mutual Life Insurance Co. and retired in 1983 after serving 16 years as a district manager. Paul retired at the age of 70, as a Deputy Game Warden with the Pennsylvania Game Commission from 1969-1992. Paul was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Two Taverns. He joined the Gettysburg Fire Department on September 9, 1949 and was a life member. Paul also held life memberships with the McSherrystown Fish and Game Asso., Blue Ridge Sportsman’s Club and the Littlestown Eagles.
Paul is survived by his son, Terry P. Helwig and wife Mary of Gettysburg, his daughter, Linda D. Ayers and husband Curtis of Gettysburg, two granddaughters; Leasie Ayers-Caswell and husband Richard Caswell and Tara Helwig, two brothers; Charles D. Helwig, Jr. of Newville, PA and Robert Helwig of Gettysburg. He was predeceased by three brothers; David, George and Sterling Helwig.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg with Sister Deborah McClellan, officiating. Interment with full military honors provided by the Adams County Allied Veterans will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens, Gettysburg. A Viewing will be held from 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
