Obituary for Phyllis Bollinger Hale

Phyllis Bollinger Hale passed away peacefully at age 92 on August 29th at SpiriTrust Lutheran Village in Gettysburg with her children by her side. She was born in 1931 in Baltimore, MD, the daughter of Johanna Eichner of MD and PA, and Stanley Eichner of Washington.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, the Rev. L. David Bollinger who died in 1984 and the Rev. Dr. J. Russell Hale who died in 1994.

She received her RN diploma from Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD in 1952. She was employed as a RN in hospitals in MD and PA and in geriatrics as a charge nurse and assistant director of nursing. She was also employed by the Dept. of Public Works where she was a Medical Assistance Facility and Record Examiner.

A life-long Lutheran she was involved with youth work, scouting, a camp for inner city children, taught Sunday School, and served on Christian Education, Social Ministry, and Witness Committees. She helped establish a day care center, a Stephen Ministry Program, served as a Stephen Leader, and volunteered with Lutheran Social Services South Region.

She became an active member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church upon her arrival in Gettysburg in 1991 where she served on congregational council and was a member of several committees. She was chair of the Task Force that began a Neighborhood Out Reach Ministry called Kids’ Time in 1995, and she continued as a tutor in that program for 11 years. As chair of the Landscape Task Force, a church garden was established, and the church cupola was illuminated. She also served on the task force that developed the Candlelight program (Songs and Stories of a Civil War Hospital) at Christ Church.

She served on the Ethics Committee of the Gettysburg Lutheran Retirement Village for five years, was a past board member of the United Way, and served on the Board of Habitat for Humanity for Adams County for four years. She volunteered at the Adams County Arts Council, the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, and the Gettysburg Festival.

She loved life and beauty in all its forms; flowers, gardening, and friends, but the real joys of her life were her much loved family. She is survived by a son, Tim Bollinger of Camp Hill, PA, and a daughter Debra Yablonski and her husband Dave of Bloomsburg, PA, and six grandchildren, Stephanie Granoff and her husband Mark, Julie Bollinger, Katie Bollinger, Josh Yablonski and his wife Kaitlin, Tim Yablonski and Briana Yablonski. She is survived by four great-grandchildren, Dylan Candioto, Will Granoff, Astrid Yablonski, and Nicholas Yablonski. She is also survived by two stepsons, Douglas Hale and his wife Meg Hardison of Delaware, OH, and Dean Hale and his wife Lucinda Hale of Eugene, OR, four step grandchildren, Brendan O’Sullivan-Hale and his husband Frank Smith IV, Colin O’Sullivan and his wife Jenny, Chris Hale, and Lydia Hale, and three step great-grandchildren, Devin, Eric, and Evie O’Sullivan.

Funeral services for Phyllis will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, September 6, 2024 at Christ Lutheran Church, 30 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg, PA with Rev. Stephen Herr officiating. Interment will be private at the New Freedom Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until the services Friday morning at the church.
