Obituary for Raymond John Wright

Raymond John Wright, 87, of Gettysburg, PA, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2024 at Dove House in Westminster, MD surrounded by his family. He was born on August 23,1936, in Frederick, Maryland. Ray was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather.


Ray is survived by his wife of 62 years, Arlene MacVicker Wright, sons Bill (Carrie) and Andrew (Teresa) Wright, daughter Jennifer (David) Roberts, grandchildren Joshua Roberts (Hannah), Megan Roberts (Joe), Jonah Roberts (Hannah), Maddy, Drew, Kelleigh, and Ben Wright, sister Rebecca Wright and brother James Wright. He was preceded in death by his father Raymond Harold Wright and mother Edna Stewart Wright.


Ray was a lifetime learner. History was important to him. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1954, earned a BA in History from Western Maryland College in 1958 and a law degree from the University of Baltimore in 1974.


Ray had a fulfilling career in the Army including assignments to 5th Special Forces Group, the University of Hawaii as an ROTC Instructor, 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He continued his service as an officer in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Colonel.


His civilian career took him to various positions with the State of Maryland including the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Budget and Fiscal Planning. Ray ended his career as the Budget Director for the State of Maryland, retiring in 1998, having served with five Maryland Governors.


He was an avid fan of any and every sport and activity his children and grandchildren participated in. As an adult he was a dedicated runner, and as a teenager played on the 1952 Frederick High School football team, the first high school team to go 10-0 in the state of Maryland. Teammates continue to get together annually.


Ray spent 55 years as a community volunteer for organizations including the Baltimore League for the Disabled, Camp Greentop, Lions Club, Habit for Humanity, volunteer firefighter, mentoring Junior ROTC students, working with an equine therapy organization and serving on election boards in South Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania. He enjoyed spending time with his friends at the American Legion, YWCA work out buddies and the neighborhood card group. Ray was a dedicated member of Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder.


A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 11:00 am at Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church, followed by a luncheon. Military Honors will be conducted at Evergreen Cemetery at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Hospital, Dove House Hospice in Westminster, Tunnels to Towers or Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church.
