
Obituary for Raymond L. Unger
Raymond L. “Ray” Unger, age 69 of Fairfield, PA passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.
Born in Gettysburg on June 22, 1948, he was the son of the late Leroy & Mae (Russell) Unger. Ray is survived by his wife of 46 years, Vertie J. (Sheaffer) Unger.
Ray was veteran of the Vietnam War serving eight years with the United States Marine Corps. He was a life member and Past Commander of VFW Post #15 in Gettysburg, member of American Legion Post #262 in Biglerville, PA and the Fairfield AmVets Post #172. Ray had been employed by McDermitt Concrete in Gettysburg for 20 years. He enjoyed making crafts from popsicle sticks.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark D. Unger and wife Tammy of New Oxford, a daughter, Susan R. Baker and husband Anthony of Orrtanna, PA, four grandchildren; Cale, Lea, Rebecca and Eli, his step-father, Harold Becker of McSherrystown, PA, and seven siblings; Terry Unger of York, PA, Tom Unger and Harold Unger both of Gettysburg, Linda Cool of Fairfield, Betty Ghawana, Stanley Unger and Janet Strite all of Hanover, PA. Ray was predeceased by a grandson, Dustin Lee Baker and two brothers; Steve and Dennis Unger.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, February 26, 2018 at the Monahan Funeral Home in Gettysburg with Pastor Garry Sheaffer, officiating, Military Honors will be provided by the Adams County Allied Veterans. Burial will be private. A Viewing will be held on Sunday, February 25, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Way, Memphis, TN 38105.
