Obituary for Rebecca H. "Betty" Simpson
Rebecca H. “Betty” Simpson of Gettysburg, PA passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the age of 98. She enjoyed a long and healthy life.
Rebecca was born in Emmitsburg, MD on June 14, 1919 to the late Earl William & Regina Rose (Ott) Heagey. Rebecca was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Ernest H. Simpson, who died in 2009. Mr. Simpson was a well respected Adams County businessman and philanthropist. They were married on December 20, 1941. Rebecca was a 1938 graduate of Gettysburg High School and attended St. Agnes School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD where she earned an RN degree in 1941. She was active in Nursing until 1945 when she and her husband took an active role in the establishment of Simpson Machine Company and Simpson Steel. She was also a homemaker and mother to two children. She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Gettysburg. She and her husband were founding members of the Gettysburg Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America and participated in the clubs activities for over a half century. Along with her husband, she was active in many charitable activities and community events over the years.
Rebecca is survived by her son, David E. Simpson and wife Patricia A. of Gettysburg, daughter-in-law, Patricia Bailey Simpson of Gettysburg, four grandchildren; Christina Simpson, Emily Simpson and Tyler Simpson all of Gettysburg and Michael Simpson of Broadlands, VA, two great grandchildren; Jacob Trostle and Aylin Simpson and a sister, Evelyn Schanberger of San Diego, CA. She was predeceased by a son, Edward W. Simpson who died in 1992, four sisters; Mary Staub, Ruth O’Connor, Agnes Myers and Jeannie Austin, and three brothers; Earl W. Heagey, Jr., Charles “Sonny” Heagey and Carl F. Heagey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 45 West High Street, Gettysburg with Fr. John Kuchinski Celebrant. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 10:30-11:00 a.m. Interment will follow the Mass in the St. Francis Cemetery.
