Obituary for Rev. Robert Henry Sternat
Robert Henry Sternat, 89 passed away peacefully Sunday morning, January 15, 2017 at Moravian Hall Square in Nazareth, PA, where he resided since the passing of his wife, Dorothy in 2011.
He was born May 6, 1927 in Hanover, PA. Robert was the son of the late Dr. Henry W. and Mary (Holinger) Sternat.
He graduated from Biglerville High School in 1945 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy at Gettysburg College in 1947 and then a Bachelor of Divinity Degree at Gettysburg Seminary in 1950. Robert was ordained a Lutheran Minister in May of 1950. His first calling was a Moxham Lutheran Church in Johnstown, PA, where he served as an Associate Pastor. On December 24, 1950 Robert became pastor at Upper Bermudian Parish, in Gardners, PA. Robert married his wife, Dorothy Winifred Shaulis on September 23, 1952. The newlyweds lived in Gardners until December 1954 when Pastor Sternat took the calling at the Mt. Wolf-Emigsville Parish. Pastor Sternat continued on to become the pastor of the newly formed St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mt. Wolf in July of 1957. Nine years later Pastor Sternat accepted the call to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Berwick, PA. In May of 1969, Holy Trinity merged with St. John’s Lutheran Church to form Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He faithfully served this congregation for 20 years until his retirement from the Ministry in May of 1989.
Robert is survived by his son, Donald R. Sternat and his wife Jill, and their children, Allison, Kaitlyn, and Tyler, of Birdsboro, PA; son, Mark H. Sternat and his wife Karen, and their children, Mark C. and Meghan, of Northampton, PA; sister, Dorothy (Sternat) Thomas predeceased him.
A viewing will be held, 1:00 PM, Saturday, January 21, 2017 at the Monahan Funeral Home, 125 Carlisle St., Gettysburg, PA until we depart for the Biglerville Cemetery for the interment at 2:00 PM. Online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.
In lieu of flowers, Robert and his family request that memorial contributions be made to: The National Park Service. Pastor and family would travel the United States tenting and trailering the National Parks of this beautiful country! (www.nationalparks.org/support)
