Obituary for Richard C. Crutchfield

Richard C. Crutchfield Jr. of Gettysburg, PA passed away on 19 September 2023. He was born in Baltimore, MD to the late Richard C. Crutchfield and M. Carmelita Crutchfield (Huesman) on 21 December 1936. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 64 years, Mary Lou Crutchfield on 15 May 2022.


He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (1954), then received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University (1957). He was one of the youngest to ever graduate from the school of engineering at the age of 20. He was awarded a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University (1963).


He worked as an electrical engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corporation for 6 years. Then worked for IBM Corporation for 28 years in various roles as an engineer. His notable achievements while at IBM were being awarded a First Invention Achievement Award on September 20, 1969 and an Outstanding Innovation Award for his design of the Global Positioning System (GPS) Receiver Formulation and Data Processing segment in October 1980. You can find your local coffee shop, thanks to his designs. He continued working as an engineer for Digital Systems Resources until his retirement in 1994.


He was a U.S. Army Reserve officer in the Signal Corps from 1957 until his honorable discharge in 1965. He was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, was a sponsor for Catechumenates as part of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. He and Mary Lou were mentors for marriage encounter programs at the church. During his retirement years, he volunteered at the Gettysburg Hospital. He was an active member of the local chapter of the Exchange Club serving as Treasurer for some time. He loved his family, gardening, wood working and sports. He had a dry sense of humor and a most witty personality.


He is survived by his children and their spouses, Alan Crutchfield (Su) of North Beach, MD; Leslie Fowler (Ross) of Baltimore, MD; Barbara Raggo (Steven) of Warrenton, VA; Kevin Crutchfield MD (Sharon) of Potomac, MD; Donna Stockwell of Hillsboro, OR and James Crutchfield of Westminster, MD. He is also survived by his brother Dennis Crutchfield (Patricia), his sisters-in-law Roma Ruether and Leigh Forshey, his brother-in-law Paul Gosselin (Patricia); fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 1:00 pm on Saturday 28 October 2023. Friends and Family will be received as early as an hour prior to the Mass. Burial at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, in Gettysburg, will occur immediately following the Mass.
