Obituary for Richard J. Neiderer

Richard J. “Dick” Neiderer, 78, of Hanover, PA died suddenly Saturday afternoon, April 20, 2024 at his home.

Born September 3, 1945 in Hanover, PA he was the son of the late Norbert and Arline (Billman) Neiderer. He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara A. (Garrett) Neiderer who died October 13, 2010 and is survived by his second wife Phyllis (Lisiewski) Shovlin Neiderer to whom he was married to for six years.

Mr. Neiderer was an active member of Sacred Heart Basilica in Hanover where he assisted with the school, was Eucharistic Minister, and usher. He was a 1963 graduate of Delone Catholic High School and a graduate of Drexel University earning a Bachelor’s degree in business. He worked at Black and Decker in Hampstead, MD before working as a manager at Appleton Papers in Camp Hill, PA where he worked for many years until his retirement. He was very involved in various ways at Delone Catholic High School serving as school board member, baseball statistician, and coach and bookkeeper at various levels with the basketball program. He was an avid Notre Dame football fan and always loved visiting campus on football weekends. He attempted to walk the Appalachian Trail after his retirement raising funds for Make a Wish, his “Wish Walk” was cut short when he got sick, but did manage to fund two different wishes for his effort. He was a member of the McSherrystown K of C and the McSherrystown Home Association.

In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by his four children, Scott Neiderer and his wife Melissa, of Mooresville, NC, Kelly Neiderer and her significant other Vincent Zabbara, of Hanover, PA, Kevin Neiderer and his wife Jacqueline, of Hanover, PA, Angela Staub and her husband Michael, of Hanover, PA, his three granddaughters, Kennedy Gentry and her husband Stuart, Cara Bruton, Paige Bruton, two step-granddaughters, Jessica Rock and her husband Eli, Laura Prietz and her husband Andy, two step-great grandsons, Oliver Rock, Oscar Rock, his brother, John Neiderer, of Hanover, four step-children, Rebecca Boll and her husband Baron, Maureen Kaltreider and her husband Russell, Peter Shovlin and his wife Laura, Marian Shovlin, nine step-grandchildren, Dalton Boll, Dylan Conley, Madalynn Brodbeck, Matthew Kaltreider, Leah Kaltreider, Emma Shovlin, Lucas Shovlin, Emily Shovlin, Anna Shovlin, as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife, Dick was preceded in death by his two brothers, Fred Neiderer, Donald Neiderer, and his sister, Jean Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, April 29, 2024 at Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 30 Basilica Dr., Hanover with Fr. Dwight Schlaline Celebrant. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM, Sunday, April 28, 2024 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall. The Monahan Funeral Home is in charge of the funeral arrangements and online condolences may be made at monahanfuneralhome.com.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sacred Heart Basilica, 30 Basilica Dr., Hanover, PA 17331 or to Delone Catholic High School, 140 S. Oxford Ave., McSherrystown, PA 17344.
