Obituary for Robert E. Shealer
Robert E. Shealer, 87, 911 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg, PA died Friday, December 22, 2017 at Transitions Healthcare in Gettysburg, PA.
He was born May 28, 1930 in Gettysburg, PA the son of the late Paul B. and Elizabeth Swisher Shealer.
Mr. Shealer was a 1948 graduate of Gettysburg High School, following which he entered the US Army serving during the Korean Conflict first with the 3rd Armored Division and later with the 122nd Army Field Band. Bob owned and operated Shealer’s Motor Clinic on Stratton Street and later on Queen Street. He also was employed at the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary. For many years Bob cared for General Eisenhower’s tractors and golf carts at his farm. He and his wife ran a Christmas shop called Christmas Curio at various locations in Gettysburg. His artwork was shown at Handcraft Unlimited and at the East Berlin Historical Preservation Society Log Cabin Christmas Craft Show. He also enjoyed drawing; creating glass postcards called “Glass Greetings”; and was an avid cartoonist. He had a great love of animals. He and his wife were friends of the Great Conewago Presbyterian Church in Hunterstown, PA.
But his real passion was music and art. At age 10 he started playing drums. In his teenage years, he enjoyed playing with a dance band in Emmitsburg, MD. He played drum in various bands in the area including the Blue and Gray Community Band, the Apple Core Band, the “Sounds of the Decades” big band from Chambersburg, PA and the “Flintstones Quartet” from Gettysburg and East Berlin, PA.
Mr. Shealer is survived by his wife Arlene Lewis Shealer, two daughters; Lissy Weirich and her husband Doug of Carlisle, PA, Kelly Koontz and her husband Jeff of Ft. Myers, FL, a son, Kevin Shealer and his companion Susan Kime of Bendersville, PA, five grandchildren; Joshua Weirich, Derek Smith, Kyle Smith, and Jared Smith and Jeff Kime; 14 great grand-children; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Richard B. Shealer and a step-brother, Paul Shealer, Jr.
A Memorial service will be held Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 11:00 AM from the Great Conewago Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 10:00 AM until the time of the service. A private graveside service will be held by the family.
