Obituary for Robert M. "Mike" Gemmill
Robert M. “ Mike” Gemmill, 83, passed away peacefully at his home at Cross Keys Village, surrounded by his family, on Friday, January 29, 2016.


Mike was born on October 18, 1932 in Hanover, PA to Joseph Raymond and Lucy J. Amour Gemmill. He was a graduate of Eichelberger High School’s (Hanover, PA) class of 1950 and Gettysburg College’s class of 1954, graduating Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Following his graduation, Mike entered the U.S. Air Force where he flew the B-25 Mitchell. Upon leaving the Air Force, Mike earned his Master’s degree in Economics from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania in 1961. He later enrolled in Northwestern University’s doctoral program from 1964-1966.


In 1958, he became an Instructor and began teaching accounting at Gettysburg College. During his 41 years at the College, he also taught courses in economics, money and banking, and finance in the College’s Economics and Business Administration department and profoundly influenced the lives of scores of Gettysburg College students. In addition to serving as interim chair of the department numerous times throughout his tenure there, he also served on the College’s Executive Committee, Faculty Personnel Committee, and the Faculty Planning Committee. He retired as Professor of Economics, Emeritus in 1999.


Mike served as Treasurer of the Adams County SPCA, was a volunteer and Board Member for the Adams County Library, and was a Red Cross Disaster team volunteer. As a member of the Menallen Friends Meeting, he was the co-founder of the Friends of Quaker Valley. He also served as a coach and referee for the Gettysburg AYSO soccer program and a softball coach for the Gettysburg Girls’ Softball Association.


Mike was an avid coin collector and Baltimore Orioles fan, and was extremely devoted to his family.


He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Mary Schroeder Gemmill, New Oxford, PA, his daughters, Shanna Gemmill Adler and husband Kevin of Harrisburg, PA and Heather Gemmill Muratore and husband Mark of Fredericksburg, VA; his step-children, Joseph A. Schroeder and wife Ellen of North Stonington, CT, Amy Schroeder Alwi and husband Aboubakar of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Gretchen Schroeder Finchum and husband Jamey of Nashua, NH and David G. Schroeder and wife Kim of Bass Harbor, ME; his grandchildren, Corwin and Chloe Adler and Grace and Nicholas Muratore; and his step-grandchildren, Allen, Daniel and Kathleen Schroeder, Alladin, Roukaya, Salma, Maryam, and Ahmad Alwi, Connor and Abigail Finchum, and Caitlin and Chelsea Schroeder.
